This year I got laid off after a decade at Pitchfork and then launched a new website. The big swings continue when I submit myself to a Reddit AMA on indieheads! Join me Monday at 3pm! https://lnkd.in/gKmuncZN

This is a first: My punk newsletter see/saw is hosting an event. I’m moderating this panel. If you’re in Cincinnati on June 16, come through!

I’m doing the unthinkable. I’m vlogging. (I’ve seen a lot of people on here have posts go viral for their standalone opening lines, but it all feels very Lefsetz to me. IYKYK.)Building a newsletter around a decidedly niche corner of the music world—garage punk and the greater sphere of rock’n’roll surrounding it—is not exactly a lucrative effort. It means I have to figure out how to get the word out and galvanize support. Here’s the link, by the way:https://see-saw.funI’m not used to going in front of the camera and am definitely an amateur when it comes to reels and tiktok. But here I am with an opening pitch in my garage loft. It’s bizarre having built a career in print and having to figure out how to also be a “personality.” It’s weirdly like doing karaoke—vulnerable, but you’re missing out if you don’t go for it.I’ll try to do more of these regularly, talking about specific records while also exploring the area where I live. We’ll see how it goes. Thanks for watching and hopefully as a result, reading!

For years I ran a punk column at Pitchfork, and after that was over, I helmed the “rock room” staff listening sessions where I’d often introduce heavy and weird music to the site’s coverage. My newsletter see/saw, which I launched this week, is an extension of that work and passion. If you want to hear the best garage punk music out there, throw me a subscription!

The thrash metal giants Power Trip are returning this year, a long road of grief following the death of Riley Gale. I spoke with the band in their first interview since everything happened. I spoke with Riley's dad. I asked everyone about what's happening next. This is my NPR debut.

Sometimes when I’m feeling down about not yet having found employment, I turn to the words of the great philosophers.

A wild surprise today to see the 2023 staff of Pitchfork recognized by the ASMEs as a nominee in a General Excellence category. Amazing to have the work we all did as a team recognized, but bizarre that it’s labor from the months before the entire infrastructure behind Pitchfork was upended. Still a win though! Please considering hiring 12 people who make things like this happen 💪https://lnkd.in/gByaXqpu

I started interning at Pitchfork in January 2010, and after a short gap, was hired part-time in March 2012. Last week, I was laid off alongside half the staff. It was an immense privilege to earn a living as a music journalist working alongside my heroes. I'm so proud of the work I did there, but more importantly, the lasting friendships and memories I made. Thanks for reading.
