The Sundays River Canal is progressing very well and will continue throughout the night. As shown in the drone video, downstream side is getting its last section covered in HDPE liner.
Significant work is still required for the next 2 days in order to complete the tie-in successfully.
Water trucks have been deployed to the areas that are experiencing water outages.
Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.

A canal failure occurred on the bend of the Lower Sunday’s River canal, that feeds water to the Scheepersvlakte Balancing Dam, in 2017.
Critical repair work has to be carried out to construct a new link canal, which will have a re-aligned position to minimize the risk of a similar collapse. The repair work will commence on Monday, 24 June 2024 (for ten days until 4 July 2024), which will require that water from the Orange River system is completely stopped, and that could potentially lead to water disruptions. Nelson Mandela Bay residents are asked to drastically reduce water consumption to accommodate the repairs.
Certain areas have been identified as being at high risk of experiencing water outages, and water tankers will be made available in these areas to ensure water continuity.
The following areas have been identified as high risk areas:
- Motherwell reservoir zone
- Perseverance
- Fairbridge Heights zone
- Chatty zone
- Reservoir Hills
- Khayamnandi
- Joe Slovo West
Other areas at risk of experiencing water disruptions include:
- Despatch
- Uitenhage
- Kwamagxaki
- Kwadwesi
Water truck positions will be communicated on the NMBM social media platforms.

A planned shutdown to carry out repairs to the Groendal raw water pipeline will affect the treatment works and its ability to supply the round and rectangular reservoirs at the works. The planned shutdown is planned for 21 June 2024.
Water is pumped from the reservoir directly into the “Rosedale” zone, areas which will be affected include: Rosedale, Kabah, Langa, Thomas Gamble, Mountain View and Mc Naughton areas. This reservoir only has enough capacity to pump for +- 6 hours.
The rectangular reservoir, which supplies Gerald Smith, the CBD and the Industrial areas can last for about a day, if supplemented from the Scheepers reservoir.
This means that areas supplied from the round reservoir will be affected if the shutdown takes longer than half a day (6 hours) while the CBD and Industries will be affected if the shutdown takes longer than a day.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused.
