The Spokesman-Review from Spokane, Washington (2024)

Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Thursday, April 15, 1999 Page C7 the Front Page Sonics: Suns look for edge in tiebreaker Continued from C1 20-6 over a six-minute span of the final quarter to take command and beat the Sonics for the fourth straight time. Phoenix will own the tiebreaker advantage if the teams finish with the same record. The previous NBA record for fewest rebounds was 20, set three times most recently by the Sonics on March 6, 1998 at Charlotte. Gary Payton led the Sonics with 31 and Vin Baker added 19. "There weren't a lot of rebounds, but they got most of them that were available," said Sonics coach Paul Westphal, who is worried about making the playoffs.

The Sonics lead the ninth-place Sacramento Kings by just games. The Sonics are 3-3 over the last six games. Their three losses have all been to teams with losing records. Tom Gugliotta, the Suns' leading scorer, returned to the starting lineup after missing six games with a knee injury and had 17 points. Kidd was 11 for 19 from the field and added 10 assists.

Manning scored nine points during a 20-6 fourth-quarter run as the Suns erased a 73-72 deficit, taking a 92-79 lead on Gugliotta's basket with 3:15 left. The Suns have beaten the Sonics twice in Seattle this season and close out against them on Sunday. "We have a lot of confidence against them," Manning said. "This was a big win because the tiebreaker really means a lot." After he scored 21 points in the first half, the Suns held Payton without a basket, until only 2:51 remained to play. George McCloud forced two turnovers by Payton that led to baskets in the Suns' game-breaking run.

The Sonics got no closer than 95-88 with 1:19 left on Hawkins' 3-point shot.
