Leslie S. "Tuck" Bowen, 87, of 6705 Martin Ferry Road, died at his home Tuesday evening. He was born in Forsyth County March 16, 1915, to Ellis Samuel Bowen and Sallie Shore Bowen. Mr. Bowen was a carpenter but was best known as the owner of Tuck's Place, a country store i in Old Town.

During World War II, he worked in the Norfolk shipyard. Mr. Bowen was an avid fox hunter and a member of the Piedmont Fox Hunters Association. For many years he was an active member of Mizpah Moravian Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel Doss Bowen in 1988.

Surviving are his second wife, Edith F. Bowen of the home; a son, Danny Bowen and his wife Linda of Tobaccoville; a daughter, Sue Bowen Allred of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Natalie Smith of Winston-Salem, Leslie Allred of Raleigh, Julie Allred of Savannah, Jill Gardner of Binghamton, N.Y., and Jennifer Bowen of Baltimore, three great -granddaughters, Taylor, Carson and Cameron Smith; and a sister, Martha Wilkins of Tobaccoville. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mizpah Moravian Church, with the Rev. Luke Bell and the Rev.

Sammy Leonard Byerly, 55, died Thursday at Lexington Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington. CATHEY PINNACLE Mrs. Patsy Carletta Mask Cathey, 57, of 150 Shoals Road passed away, Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

She was born Aug. 23, 1944, in Spalding County, to Bernard and Juanita Carletta Moss Mask. She was employed at Sara Lee and of the Pentecostal faith. She is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Deborah and Tim Wheeler of Pilot Mountain, Cynthia Ann Burgett of New York, N.Y., and Teresa Lynn Cathey of Detroit, four sons and daughters-inlaw, Robert and Ashlie Burgett of Senoia, Anthony and Leslie Jackson of Pinnacle, Ronald C. Cathey of Winnsboro, S.C., and Marc L.

Charles "Charlie" Edwin Clarke formerly of Lewisville, died May 8, 2002, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh after a brief illness. He was born April 29, 1920, in Kenly to the late Fedora Haxall and the Rev. Charles Clarke. In his MR. CLARKE early years, MR.

CLARKE being in a Presbyterian minister's family, he lived several places and was known as "Ed." He served in the Army Air Force in transportation stateside and in the Philippines, and held the rank of lieutenant. State graduates. Charlie was a civil engineer in road construction with state, city and private employment. He was most notable at L.A. Reynolds Co. in Winston-Salem and retired from the city of WinstonSalem.

He always enjoyed the roar and grind of heavy equipment and the progress of a project. For 35 years Charlie and Juanita lived in their dream home in Lewisville. Charlie held several leadership roles in Lewisville United Methodist Church. He was an avid and competitive bridge player. Although dedicated to his profession, he enjoyed fishing and RV camping.

Charlie spent many enjoyable months traveling across America; summers in Myrtle Beach and winters in Melbourne Beach, Fla. After retirement from construction, he enjoyed developing a love of steam locomotives. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles "Joe" E. Clarke III in 1965. Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Juanita Stainback Clarke, of the home; his daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Billy Quinton of Angier; grandchildren Steve Quinton and Mindy Quinton of Raleigh; his brother and sisterin-law, Nancy and L.H.

"Hax" Clarke of Pine Level; and nephew and family, Bill and Susie Clarke (children Matthew, Elizabeth and Michael). Charlie dedicated his last few years in the care of his wife and his daughter and sonin with treasured memories, trust, respect, admiration and love. He affectionately called Billy "Boss" and Marsha was the love of his life. He will be remembered as a loyal, outspoken, inventive, outgoing man with a zest for life. His presence and stories will be missed.

Funeral services will be p.m. Saturday at Lewisville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Don Routh officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

Evangelist Mother Bessie Martin Davis, 95, formerly of 191 Greyhound Court, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Sept. 19, 1908, in Warrenton, Warren CounMRS. DAVIS ty, to Willie and Katie Hawkins Crosson.

She gave her life to the Lord at an early age and lived for him until her death. She was a member of New Gospel Tabernacle Holy Church and was the Mother of the Church. She was a member of the Scottish Rites Order of Eastern Star. She leaves to cherish her memories a son, Charles (Bell) Jones of Springfield, three nieces, Helen (George) Points of Wash- ington, D.C., and Pauline and Lorraine Bryant of Warrenton; a nephew, Jack Jones of Warrenton; devoted godchildren, Eugene and Rosa Lee Haney and family and Patrick and Elizabeth Vaughn of Charlotte; and other relatives and friends. HAWKS CANA, Va. Mrs. Annie Marie Hawks, 72, of 347 Sandy Ridge Road, wife of Burlie Edward Hawks, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Hawks was born March 9, 1930, in Carroll County, to Elliott Robert and Fannie Underwood Hawks.

She was a homemaker and a member of Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Joel Gibson Hicks 86, of Winston -Salem died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 15, 1916, in Forsyth County to Silas Augburn and Lilly Gordon Hicks.

Mr. Hicks was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II, and was retired from Greyhound Bus Co. Surviving are his wife, Helen Saylor Hicks of the home; a son, Joel G.

Burial will be at Mountlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Lockhart was born Jan. 25, 1948, in Wilkes County to Herman Hobert and Ruth Stanley Lockhart. He was the vice president of quality control at Gardner Glass Products and was a member of Baptist Home Baptist Church.

Mr. Lockhart served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict. He was a graduate of N.C. State University in 1970.

Matthews was a member of East Bend Baptist Church. He was the owner of Rivermont Golf Course in Siloam. Surviving are his wife, Joset S. Jackson Yadkinville, NC 27055. PRITCHETT Mrs. Blanche "Granny" Gainey Pritchett, 80, of Winston-Salem died peacefully at her home with her family Thursday, May 9, 2002. She was born Nov. 3, 1921, in Cairo, to Tom and Brinnie Gainey.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother and attended New Mount Vernon United Methodist PRITCHETT MRS. Church. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Master Sgt. John W. Pritchett Sr.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories a devoted daughter, Janet P. Glascoe, and her husband, Larry, of Winston-Salem; two sons, John W. Pritchett Jr. and his wife, Betsey, of Goldsboro and James N. Pritchett of Winston-Salem; a faithful sister in-law, Mattie Mae McCall and her husband, Lamar; four grandchildren, Carrie P.

Rowe and her husband, John, Jennifer P. Ganious and her husband, Richard and Wesley D. Glascoe and his wife, Kathy; her special caregivers, Melissa G. Norman H. Leake and Gwen B. Leake of Winston-Salem. MRS. ROLFE Ann attended Sullins College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and later worked at the Winston-Salem Journal in the Accent and Editorial departments.

She joined Republic Mortgage Insurance Co. (RMIC) as a in 1983, where she worked until 1998, when she began a four-year battle with ovarian cancer. Ann threw herself into her battle with cancer with characteristic tenacity, intelligence and grace, leaving no stone unturned in her search for effective tools against a relentless enemy. Her patient courage was an inspiration to the many people she met during her struggle with cancer. Despite her concerns with her own health, Ann gave her greatest attention to the care of her three daughters, ensuring that they obtained the solid base of love and poise they need.

Ann taught her daughters the lessons of patience, endurance, courage and grace under extreme pressure. Ann is survived by her husband, David Rolfe; and her daughters, Eleanor, Susan and Sally. She is also survived by her mother, Gwen Leake; brothers John Churchill Leake and Hansford Bennett Leake; mother-in-law Anna M. Rolfe; brother-in-law Paul B. Rolfe and wife Linda Farrell Rolfe of Raleigh; and many cousins, aunts and uncles spread across Virginia and the Carolinas.

SHOUSE God stopped by Monday, May 6, 2002, and removed Louise Crutchfield Shouse from earth to glory, and now she is free at last and God has wiped away her tears and pain. Louise was born March 13, 1919 to the union of the late Della Miller Crutchfield and Frank Forest Crutchfield in Forsyth County. She was married to the late Robert Decatur Shouse, who preceded her in death in 1996. They were married for 47 years. Louise at a very early age became a member of Bethania AME Zion Church, where she served as an organist and devoted Missionary No.

2 former president and deaconess. She always had a sense of humor and kind words of encouragement. She carried a warm smile on her face and was eager to do whatever she could to help anyone and everyone. Louise was never discouraged even in her last days with her body racked with pain. She just looked and said calmly, "I'll be all right." Her life was like an ocean, as she touched many, many lives.

She was indeed a "people" person. Survivors include a loving brother, James (Julia) Alexander Crutchfield; devoted niece and nephew, Gloria Crutchfield (Rayvon) Cuthrell and James Alexander Crutchfield Jr. (Carolyn). She was the loving and devoted godmother of the Vernon Rudolph and W.C. Wilson families she loved dearly; a most-caring caregiver and niece, Alma Joyce; a very special neighbor, Alice Jean Allen; and a host of cousins, friends and other neighbors.

Funeral services for Mrs. Louise C. Shouse will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2002, at the Bethania AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Johnny Ruff, pastor, officiating.
